988 and Beyond: A Simple Guide to Crisis Resources

Introduction

In a moment of crisis, knowing where to turn can feel just as important as knowing what to say. Fortunately, help is more accessible today than many people realize.

This guide breaks down the resources available right now, so you or someone you love never has to face a crisis without support.

What Is 988?

988 is the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, a free, confidential resource available across the United States. You can call or text 988 at any time to speak with a trained crisis counselor.

It is designed for anyone experiencing a mental health crisis, emotional distress, or thoughts of suicide, as well as for those who are worried about someone else.

How the 988 Process Works

When you call or text 988, you will be connected with a counselor trained to listen without judgment. They will help you work through what you are feeling and connect you to additional resources if needed.

This service is free and confidential, so you do not need to worry about cost or unwanted consequences from reaching out.

Other Crisis Resources Worth Knowing

Beyond 988, the Crisis Text Line allows you to text HOME to 741741 to reach a trained counselor through text message, which can feel more comfortable for some people than speaking aloud.

Emergency rooms are also equipped to handle mental health crises if immediate, in-person intervention is needed. Local community mental health centers can offer walk-in support as well.

What to Do If Someone Else Is in Crisis

If someone you love is expressing thoughts of self-harm or suicide, stay with them if it is safe to do so, and help them contact 988 or a local crisis line. Avoid leaving them alone during this time.

Remove access to anything that could be used for self-harm if possible, and reassure them that reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

After the Crisis: What Comes Next

Crisis resources are essential in the moment, but ongoing mental healthcare is just as important afterward. Follow-up care helps prevent future crises and supports long-term healing.

At SiLou Health, we offer mental health evaluations, medication management, and supportive therapy through telehealth in Florida and Rhode Island, with in-person visits also available in Rhode Island, to help people continue healing after a difficult moment.

You Are Never Truly Alone

No matter how heavy things feel, help is always within reach. Save these resources, share them with someone who may need them, and remember that reaching out is always the right choice.
